Matariki is the Maori New Year. For the Indigenous people of Aoteroa/New Zealand it is the beginning of a year. Matariki stands for the constellation of the stars. The stars are important for Maori culture as it represents prosperity. During the week children performs Maori action songs, waiatas and our Kaiako use this time of the year to read stories about Matariki and Maori culture and introduce new waiatas and cultural stories from Maori culture.
