This is our first centre opened in 2012. It is a state-of-the-art purpose build centre which provides all-day and sessional education and care for up to 54 children, including 10 Babies from 0 to 2 years. We have a very good participation from children of diverse cultural backgrounds of the local community. We aims to provide exemplary childcare for the children of Mt Roskill, in partnership with parents/whānau and the wider community. This is our one and only centre who caters for children from 0-2 years of age.
We are proud of the close relationships we have with our families. We celebrate a diverse range of cultural events and have regular parent information sessions and fun social gatherings. This enables us to respond to children’s personal needs, catering to their routines and encouraging them in their interests and development.
For providing children with developmentally appropriate activities and facilities we have three separate rooms and have placed children into three age groups.
For babies from birth till the age of 2 years
The babies room is a large, colourful and inviting nursery with fun-filled activities that encourage a multitude of developmental skills
Lots of space for children to develop their gross motor skills, such as; rolling, crawling and walking
10 babies at a time in our nursery and all children have their own cot and bedding
A children monitoring camera will always be operating to ensure safe supervision of children, along with adult supervision in the sleep room. Electronic beepers are used to track the five minutes time
We have an open door policy where parent/whanau and children are welcome to spend time with us

Toddlers room has children from 2-3 years of age
In the toddlers room we provide a warm and nurturing environment for your child to learn develop and make sense of the world
Our curriculum for toddlers is responsive to their rapidly growing capabilities to support them develop their physical, social and language capabilities their language learning is supported through conversations, stories and songs in which they play an increasing part
For toddlers we provide a large outdoor area where they can observe, explore and enjoy a wonderful array of activities to meet the unique needs of each individual child
This area and activities are carefully planned, implemented and monitored to enhance every child’s holistic development – social, emotional, physical and intellectual
The toddlers room has a sleep area and we do our best to follow the sleeping routine at home
Since this is an age they are learning to self-regulate, amidst the feelings that are sometimes intense and unpredictable, the toddler’s room has space for quiet play and reading, soft space for resting and bottles, family and role play, puzzles, blocks and much more
We also promote independence and encourage children to be confident communicators before they move to the preschool room
Preschool room has children from 3 ½ years to 5+ years old
Other than age, we make sure children will be moved to this room when they are ready for it
At this age children have an increasing capacity for language and inquiry and for understanding others point of view
They becomes much more aware of cultural expectations, understanding that different cultures have different expectations and that what is appropriate in one context may not be appropriate in another
This stage of early childhood education is also about self help skills and making them confident and ready for school
Depending on the emergent interest of the children, they are offered with various activities that fosters their skills and knowledge in all the areas of the curriculum in a creative and inviting environment
Children are also encouraged to explore the creative learning environment set for them both indoors and outdoors depending on the weather condition

We have our own thoughtfully developed Transition to School programme based on the Early Childhood Curriculum -Te Whariki-2017 and New Zealand Curriculum for primary school in the preschool room to support the children and families without any break in the learning and development of the children.

A rich learning environment to promote literacy and numeracy in the best possible manner.
Empowering children with social and emotional competency
Confidence to communicate precisely and clearly about their all day needs and developing skills to take care of their belongings. In the morning, children put away their own bags int their lockers, their lunch box, this allows them to develop their independence skills, gain a sense of responsibility for their own belongings and keeps their brains fresh and clear as they have sips of their water throughout the day. The teachers encourage children to tie their shoe laces to those who are interested.
Regular home work, Weekly home work-book bags are marked and given out on Fridays for children to work on over the weekend if they would like to do. This not only allow children to practice their handwriting and numeracy skills but also develops responsibility in a child to look after their own belongings and recognise their own names.
Daily Morning Mat Times-during our morning mat times, the teachers and children sings or talk about days of the week, months of the year and the weather chart. This aims to promote children’s language, confidence and gain general knowledge.
Reading sessions by native English speakers of the language to promote reading.
Jolly phonics to develop literacy through synthetic phonics- which first teaches the letter sounds and then builds up to blending these sounds together to achieve full pronunciation of whole words. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds children are introduced to the world of reading and writing. In the preschool rom there are jolly phonic videos which children can sing along to and we also have cards for each letter which children can use to practice writing and reading.
Emergent reading books- our library corner has a wide variety of books available to the pre-schoolers. One of which includes emergent reading books which have repetition of high frequency words in them and puzzle and mazes book which also promote numeracy skills through play. Teachers also takes turns renewing books from the children to read.
Literacy and Numeracy caterpillar- this caterpillar displayed in the Preschool Room, indicates all the numeracy knowledge that is expected from children in the first and second stage of the national standards.
Emergent curriculum programmes which integrates with numeracy and literacy-while the teachers in the pre-school room observe children’s interest and plan emergent curriculum programmes according to those interests, they also integrate literacy and numeracy skills into the activities.
Mental Maths-Games and activities to support the learning and development of early mathematics and concepts
All learning developments, interests, areas of improvement and dispositions are documented in the form of learning stories in children’s portfolios of the 3/4th or 5 years that they have spend at LBLC . Especially the last page of the portfolios sums up everything and in the assessment page for the new entrant teachers to start with for the school.
Termly school visits for the transitioning children to make them familiar with the school environment and the teachers.
Display boards in Preschool Room- “All about my school/What school I am going to?” that contains all the information about the local schools that also includes photos of uniforms, new entrant teachers and info of term starting dates will be provided in this wall. This will not only make children familiar with their next step, but also make them excited and look forward to starting school.
“Older Buddies Visiting Little Buddies programme”-for our soon to be transitioning kids at LBLC to hear about the school and exciting stories from their older buddies who left LBLC and have started school. ‘Older Buddies’ would be encouraged to read a book of readings or do an alphabet activity with the ‘Little Buddies’ during Mat Times.
Letter of the Week programme children and teachers choose a letter for the week to work on. Teachers can utilize this time provide children learning experiences related to the chosen letter. This is an opportunity to welcome contributions from home too.
